Name of EFA Student: Biazen Melese
Age: 15 (as of 2016)
Quote: “I am fully committed to learn and reach to a higher level and lead myself.”
History: Biazen is currently in the 5th Grade at Shimbet Government School. He doesn’t have a care giver in his life. Although, when he came to our area, there was a group of 2-3 individuals (who also have similar physical limitations and are in wheelchairs) who took him into their compound. This was when he didn’t have a place to live and he was shining shoes on the streets. Biazen was earning about 30 birr/day ($1.50USD/day). This amount covers bread & tea for breakfast and a small lunch.
Disability: His disability was first identified by his mom when he was still crawling at about 2 years old. He was told that his mom left when he was still a baby. After some years, he heard that she died. He came to Bahir Dar to receive help for his problem. There really isn’t help in the rocky/hilly countryside. He went to a disability NGO, who sent him to Addis Ababa to get evaluated. This is when his disability received an official name, Polio.
